‘I looked up the term “Concentration Camp” in the encyclopedia, and it states, “Concentration camp, internment center for political prisoners and members of national or minority groups who are confined for reasons of state security, exploitation, or punishment, usually by executive decree or military order. Persons are placed in such camps often on the basis of identification with a particular ethnic or political group rather than as individuals and without benefit either of indictment or fair trial. “
Russia has used them on political prisoners. The United States has used them on Japanese-American citizens. On Native Americans. On Black Americans. And yes, the Nazis used them. Starting in 1933, they used them to contain political opponents and then moved on to Gypsies, Gay people, Social Democrats, and Jews. It wasn’t until 1940 that they established actual death camps.
And now the President Trump’s administration, on behalf of the United States, is using concentration camps to imprison poor migrant families, most of which are legally seeking asylum.
24 people have died in ICE custody since Trump took office. 6 more children have died in the hands of related agencies. 52,000 people in 200 ICE concentration camps.
It may not make you feel comfortable to hear the word concentration camp. But your government is running concentration camps, according to the Encyclopedia Britannica definition of them.
If you want to debate the definition of a place that imprisons families here legally seeking asylum, without a fair hearing or trial, separates families under their care, often permanently and without a way to reunite them, in overcrowded conditions, rife with abuse, violence, and death in an attempt to create a political narrative that preys on our worst instincts and xenophobia, we’re gonna have a bad time.
The United States of America is running concentration camps, where men, women, and children are dying. Those are facts. They haven’t become nazi death camps. But the fact remains that we are here, in 2019, with something that repeats any part of our horrible history with Japanese Americans, or with any brutal regime’s plans from the past, is appalling.
Do not be ok with your country running concentration camps where people are dying. Do not make excuses. Do not vilify those less fortunate than you seeking a better life. Find a way to get past what you’ve been told to accept, and understand that the United States is running 200 concentration camps where people are dying and are being treated horrifically.
